The Yumihari Chōchin (literally, "bow-stretched lantern") is perhaps the most iconic type of handheld Japanese lantern, instantly recognizable in historical dramas. It grew significantly in importance as an essential piece of equipment throughout the Edo period (1603–1868).

Key Features:

The main difference setting the Yumihari Chōchin apart from other collapsible lanterns is its distinctive handle:

• The "Yumi" Handle: It features a prominent single curved bamboo handle (yumi or "bow") fixed to the wooden rings at the top and bottom of the paper body.

• Portability & Durability: This sturdy handle made the lantern easy to hold while walking and often served as a stand, allowing it to be placed on the ground. Its robust design even allowed it to be used by the Samurai, sometimes referred to as a "Bajo Chōchin" (horseback lantern).

• Shape & Material: The paper body (hibukuro) is typically cylindrical (known as maru-gata or tamago-gata). 弓張提灯（ゆみはりちょうちん）は、文字通り「弓を張った提灯」を意味し、おそらく最も象徴的な手持ちの和提灯の種類であり、時代劇で一目でそれとわかります。これは江戸時代（1603年～1868年）を通じて不可欠な装備品として重要性を増しました。

特徴

他の折りたたみ式提灯との弓張提灯の主な違いは、その独自の持ち手にあります。

• 「弓」（Yumi）の持ち手： 竹製の、目立つ湾曲した一本の持ち手（「弓」またはyumi）が特徴です。この持ち手は、和紙の本体の上下の木製リングに固定されています。
